Summary Of Research for Vitamin D

These are speaker notes and supporting research for topics discussed at a 2009 Seminar given by Marie McCaffrey, creator of altmedangel.com and HealthSecretsSummit.com. This was cutting-edge information at the time and is still largely ignored by mainstream medicicne. If you study the chart below, I believe you will find it extremely enlightening. - It's good material to test your doctor's knowledge.

Benefits of Vitamin D

  • Prolongs life
  • Prevention of diabetes
  • Protection against multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Regulates inflammation, helps autoimmune diseases
  • Signals colon, breast and prostate cells to stop growing (cancer prevention) – reduces cancer rate by 30-50%
  • Reduces breast cancer 82%
  • Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is well known
  • Aids in weight loss (minor effect)
  • Improves mental and nerve function, fights anxiety and depression
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Deficiency can cause muscle cramps, spasms and parasthesias
  • Improves mood in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Improves skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema
  • Higher doses now recommended by the Vitamin D council
  • Works like a flu shot, lowering flu infection rates
  • Strengthens blood brain barrier for brain protection

The Table below shows the blood serum level of vitamin D impact or correlation with various diseases. The percent on the left indicates the reduction of incidence found in that specific disease when the serum levels are brought up to the horizontal axis number. The percent on the right indicates the same. The chart legend explains this nicely.

  • Legend:
  • All percentages reference a common baseline of 25 ng/ml as shown on the chart. %’s reflect the disease prevention % at the beginning and ending of available data. Example: Breast cancer incidence is reduced by 30% when the serum level is 34 ng/ml vs the baseline of 25 ng/ml. There is an 83% reduction in incidence when the serum level is 50 ng/ml vs the baseline of 25 ng/ml. The x’s in the bars indicate ‘reasonable extrapolations’ from the data but are beyond existing data.

In the following trial pubished on Pub Med by the National Library of Medicine, "Vitamin D and calcium supplementation reduces cancer risk: results of a randomized trial" - supplementation with modest amounts of vitamin D, plus calcium, resulted in a 77% reduction in the incidence of all cancers over the following 4 years.
